Artist: Jose Chameleone

Joseph Mayanja, famous across East Africa as Jose Chameleone, was born on April 30, 1979, in Kampala, Uganda. He is one of eight siblings, raised by Gerald and Prossy Mayanja. Growing up in this lively family environment laid the groundwork for his future in music.
Chameleone’s music combines traditional Ugandan folk, Central African rhumba, zouk, and reggae. This mix of styles has struck a chord with audiences far and wide, earning him many dedicated fans.
He kicked off his music career in 1996, working as a DJ at the Missouri night club in Kampala. Craving to make his own music, he moved to Kenya in 1998, diving into music production and performance. In Kenya, he teamed up with Ogopa Deejays, a famous record label that was key to the start of his recording career. The Kenyan reggae and ragga artist Redsan lent his vocals to Chameleone’s first single, “Bageya.”
In 2000, Chameleone launched his first album, “Mama Mia,” marking a big moment in his career. This album showcased his talent and helped him establish his name in the music scene. Following this were several hit songs that became favorites in East Africa, such as “Valu valu,” “Jamila,” “Shida za dunia,” “Bayuda,” “Tatizo,” “Nkwagala nyo,” “Kipepeo,” and “Dorotia.”
Apart from his widely recognized musical talents, Jose Chameleone has also excelled as an entrepreneur, founding his own music label, Leone Island. He also cares deeply about giving back to the community. Through the Chameleone Foundation, he supports disadvantaged youth, helping them build skills and discover their potential.
His huge influence in the music industry has made Chameleone more recognized and garnered numerous awards,Notably, he received the All Africa Music Award (AFRIMA) for Songwriter of the Year in 2015. This award, among others, highlights his significant and long-lasting influence on African music.
